Solar Heating - Alternative Power for Home Use

Harnessing solar heating for residences can help everyone warm especially during the cold winter season. The fact is that solar power for homes are now very popular alternative means to have power and at the same time save that money that is actually allocated for power consumption.

Even if one is found living or located at areas where sun light does not fall at its maximum, he can still be able to take advantage of solar heating. Most solar panels are now created to adequately store sun energy to be converted into valuable power that will be used for heating the homes and running the appliances.

The expenses involved in installing home solar panels can be expensive. However, it cannot be denied that heaters running on electricity can also be costly, not to mention the electric power expenses of running them. However, there are DIY (do it yourself) sun-powered devices that are less expensive yet can provide valuable solar heating.

There are simple solar panels and heaters that can be easily assembled by anyone such as those found in hardware shops and stores. Such devices come with important instruction manuals that will guide you through the assembling process. Before you know it, you have for yourself a solar heating device for your home, one which you create yourself and a device that will surely help you use less electric power.

With System Complete, IKEA Powers Up Solar Energy in Tempe, AZ

TEMPE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--With company representatives, local officials and community leaders on-hand, IKEA, the world?s leading home furnishings retailer, today officially plugged-in the solar energy system installed at its store in Tempe, Arizona. The 75,000-square-foot array consists of two 300-kW systems, each built with approximately 1,300 panels (for a total 2,600). IKEA Tempe?s solar program will produce approximately one million kWh of electricity annually, the equivalent of reducing at least 760 tons of carbon dioxide (C02) ? equaling the emissions of 133 cars or powering 84 homes yearly (calculating clean energy equivalents at www.epa.gov/cleanenergy/energy-resources/calculator.html).

This effort represents the third active solar energy project for IKEA in the U.S. Systems are operational in Brooklyn, NY and Pittsburgh, PA and plans are underway for installing programs at eight IKEA locations in California. Also, a geothermal system has been incorporated into the store under construction in Centennial, CO.

IKEA contracted with Gloria Solar for the development, design and installation of this customized solar power system. Gloria Solar is the United States operating group focused on the photovoltaic system business within the family of E-Ton Solar Group. This project ? the largest commercial installation in SRP?s service area ? is being implemented as part of the EarthWise Solar Energy program of SRP, the third-largest public power utility in the country. SRP provides more than 940,000 electric customers in the Phoenix metropolitan area through a variety of resources including solar, wind, biomass, geothermal and hydroelectricity.

?We are thrilled at how this solar energy system furthers our sustainability commitment at IKEA Tempe,? said Robby Wierman, IKEA Tempe store manager. ?IKEA has a never-ending job where most things still remain to be done. We constantly ask ourselves how what we are doing today can be done better tomorrow. We appreciate the support of the City of Tempe as well as SRP and Gloria Solar, our partners in this project.?

IKEA, drawing from its Swedish heritage and respect of nature, strives to be a good business while doing good business and reflects an operating model designed to minimize impacts on the environment. Other sustainable efforts include: integrating innovative materials into the production process; working with Global Forest Watch to maintain sustainable resources; flat-packing our goods for an efficient distribution system; recycling approximately 75 percent of our waste (paper, wood, plastic, etc.); and incorporating environmental measures into the construction of our buildings in terms of energy-efficient HVAC and lighting systems, recycled construction materials, low volatile organic compound emitting paint, skylights in our warehouse, and water conserving restrooms.

Located on 23 acres along I-10 near Warner Road, the 342,000-square-foot IKEA Tempe opened in November 2004 and employs approximately 250 coworkers. In addition to 10,000 exclusively designed items, IKEA Tempe presents 44 different room-settings, three model home interiors, a supervised children?s play area, and a 250-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties such as meatballs with lingonberries and salmon plates, as well as American dishes. Other family-friendly features include a Children?s IKEA area in the Showroom, baby care rooms, preferred parking and play areas throughout the store.

There are currently more than 300 IKEA stores in 38 countries, including 37 in the U.S. Since its 1943 founding in Sweden, IKEA, the world?s leading home furnishings company, has offered home furnishings and accessories of good design and quality at low prices so the majority of people can afford them. TIME Magazine listed IKEA as one of the top eight most global eco-conscious companies (2009). IKEA incorporates sustainable efforts into day-to-day business and supports initiatives that benefit children and the environment. For more information, go to IKEA-USA.com.

What exactly is Grid-Tie system and exactly how does it work?

Grid-tie solar panel systems produce energy, transmitting this power to your utility company’s electrical power grid. Essentially, this implies the utility company will be paying out you to generate electricity for them, because the power you have produced counts against the energy your property or company utilizes. Your own solar power panels may generate DC [...]
